Birds of paradise are undoubtedly the most desirable creatures to spot in Papua New Guinea. However, there are also another interesting animals to see, including countless invertebrates, marsupials or marine mammals. East New Britain provides one of the best spots in the world for snorkeling with dolphins. Swimming with a pod of hundreds of spinner dolphins is an unforgettable experience. If you are lucky, you may even spot shy, elusive dugongs grazing on seagrass around calm islands. Remote forests are home for cuscus and tree kangaroos - relatives of Australian rock wallabies. Both live far away from villages and you will theh guidence of a local bushman to spot them. On the other hand, rock wallabies inhabiting Loloata island, a stone's throw from Port Moresby, are easy to find. Swamps of Sepik river are home for saltwater crocodiles, while sandy beaches of Morobe and Milne Bay Provinces attract leatherback turtles, that dig nests and lay eggs from November until March. If you are into 'bugs', Papua New Guinea has them by the truckload, including splendid butterflies, giant Hercules moths, shiny bugs, well camouflaged stick insects, the Queen Alexandra's birdwing - the largest butterfly in the world and more
