Papua New Guinea provides one of the most spectacular birdwatching opportunities in the world due to endemic bird species, especially birds of paradise. There are 41 known species of these birds, of which 34 species are unique to Papua New Guinea. From coral - ringed islands right up to the peaks of rugged mountains, birdwatchers can spot abundant numbers of different birds. Birding season runs mainly in dry season, from June until October. However, it is possible to organise tours at any time of the year. The top locations include the Highlands, Fly River basin and Port Moresby's surrounds, but almost every corner of Papua New Guinea provides great birding opportunities. Houn Peninsula, Madang, Alotau and Vanimo ares, Kimbe Bay, Bougainville, Manus and Normanby Islands are also worth to mention. Spotting the male Raggiana - the bird of paradise which decorates the flag of Papua New Guinea - is a must even if you are not into birding.
